Reflection #4
The tenant that most related to me was assessment for learning develops learners’ capacity for self-assessment so that they can become reflective and self-managing. This tenet stuck out to me the most because the article repeatedly gave different references of the importance of knowing one’s self to help with the learning process and teaching process as well. To help with the teaching process, it is important to know the audience you are teaching for so that the information can be prepared in the best manner in relation to what exactly is being taught. Helping students become self-motivated starts with helping the children believe in themselves.
Developing a portfolio of work throughout the year is a tangible way of showing students all the areas they have explored, developed and enhanced throughout the semester. Saving an assignment to your portfolio allows people to reflect back on the work they have done over the past semester and throughout their graduate programs. Some students feel that they do not learn anything in school because of the redundant work but do not realize that the information is stored away in your brain like a portfolio. A portfolio could help retain more information learned in class to help with future classes or be a reflection of the knowledge you have acquired over the years. Success motivates people so creating task that students can easily master gives them the confidence to conquer bigger assignments. The technological literacies I have gained since the beginning of graduate school were not that obvious to me until the beginning of this semester when I was able to navigate more smoothly through assignments. I have really learned much more than I gave myself credit for. Having to create blogs, wikis and build a portfolio, the ways of implementing technology into a classroom setting are becoming clearer to me and will allow for an easier transition from the traditional way of teaching.
The portfolio assessment will be good for both the teacher and student. Once again realizing all the skills and knowledge that has been acquired is a definite benefit for the student. It gives the teacher of way of knowing how well the student understood the curriculum. The portfolio essentially functions as a resume. Skills that can be utilized in many other areas of life will be displayed in a completed and organized portfolio. This could allow for different opportunities because of the realization of the vast skills that you could offer an employer. The creation of my portfolio will help me gain more skills to become a better educator and be better able to present information in other areas such as workshops for organizations.
Yes, your portfolio can serve as a resume and in effect a marketing tool.
